What are nasolabial folds?
Nasolabial folds are the deep wrinkles or lines that run from the bottom of the nose to the corners of the mouth. They are extremely common, though their severity varies a great deal.
What causes them?
Age, sun damage and smoking are the biggest culprits. Ultraviolet rays break down the collagen and elastin fibres that keep skin smooth and supported; smoking breaks down the same fibres. As you age, cumulative damage makes the folds more prominent.
Ordinary ageing plays a part even without sun damage or smoking. The structure of the cheekbones flattens out over time, which lets the skin of the cheeks sag downwards. Add years of gravity and a natural decrease in collagen, and the folds deepen.
Treatment
We offer dermal fillers, platelet-rich plasma injections, and botulinum toxin (Botox). Your doctor will help you work out the cause of your own deepening folds and the right treatment for them.
