What is mental illness?
Mental illness is a broad term covering a wide variety of conditions that affect the way you feel and think, and your ability to get through day-to-day life. It can be influenced by genetics, environment, daily habits and biology.
How common is it?
Mental health issues are common worldwide. In the United States, about one in five adults experiences at least one mental illness each year, and about one in five young people aged 13 to 18 experiences one at some point. The figures in Pakistan are higher still — around 34%.
Although mental illness is common, severity varies. About one in 25 adults experiences a serious mental illness in a given year, which can significantly reduce the ability to carry out daily life.
