Seeing a Psychiatrist From Home: How Telemedicine Works at TLC

Seeing a Psychiatrist From Home: How Telemedicine Works at TLC

For many people, the hardest part of getting mental health care is simply getting to the appointment. Traffic, distance, work hours, caring for family, or worrying about being seen at a clinic all get in the way. Telemedicine removes those barriers. At TLC, you can have a full consultation with your psychiatrist by video, audio or chat, from home or anywhere you have a private space and an internet connection.

Is an online consultation as good as an in-person one?

For most psychiatric care, yes. A psychiatric assessment is built on conversation: your symptoms, history, sleep, stress, medicines and goals. All of that can be discussed just as thoroughly over video. Research over many years has found that video-based mental health care can be as effective as face-to-face care for conditions such as depression and anxiety, and many patients find it easier to open up from a familiar setting.

Telemedicine or an in-clinic visit?

We will always tell you if an in-clinic visit is needed.

Telemedicine is not for emergencies. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, go to the nearest emergency department or call Rescue 1122.

How it works, step by step

  1. Book online. Choose your service, doctor and a time that suits you at tlcmedclinics.com, and choose video, audio or chat.
  2. Confirm your booking. You'll receive a confirmation and a reminder before your appointment.
  3. Join from your account. At your appointment time, open the appointment in your TLC account or app and press Join. No extra software is needed.
  4. Your consultation. Your psychiatrist talks with you in detail, just as in the clinic, and agrees a plan with you.
  5. After the visit. Your notes, any prescription and your follow-up appointment are available in your account.

Getting ready for your video visit

  • Find a quiet, private room where you won't be overheard.
  • Use a phone, tablet or laptop with a working camera and microphone; headphones help with privacy.
  • Check your internet connection, and keep your phone charged.
  • Write down your symptoms, questions and a list of current medicines, including doses.
  • Join a few minutes early.

Is it private?

Yes. Consultations take place inside your secure, signed-in TLC account. Your conversation stays between you and your doctor, and your records are only visible to you and the clinical team caring for you.
